What is (MLD) ?

is an advanced form of massage that aims to stimulate the lymphatic system to remove congestion and stagnation from within the body, and so help it return to a healthy condition.

It is a method of mechanically encouraging the movement of fluids through the tissue.  This treatment mimics the movement and action of the lymph within the body.

The main function of the lymphatic system is detoxification and disposal of metabolic waste.  This waste includes toxins which accumulate and cause lowered energy levels, fatigue and mood swings.

Many conditions can respond favourably to MLD, for example:

  • Weakened immune system

  • Fluid retention & swelling of the tissue (oedema)

  • Chronic congestion (sinus etc)

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Healing of wounds, burns and scars

  • Post operative swelling; for example -  knee replacement and bunion removal

  • For sprains and injuries, MLD is a very useful adjunct to Physiotherapy

  • MLD is often incorporated into the treatment and control of Lymphoedema

WHAT IS A MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD) TREATMENT?

MLD is a gentle hand on treatment that helps to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body. It helps to increase the fluid process by directing it to the viable lymph nodes, filtering the fluid and then returning it to the heart.

What conditions benefit from MLD Therapy

What conditions benefit from it?

  • Persistent swelling

  • Swelling post-surgery

  • Post mastectomy

  • Palliative care

  • Swelling with injuries

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Lymphoedema

  • Sinusitis

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Fibromyalgia

  • MS

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A TREATMENT?

On an initial appointment, a thorough history will be taken and a good understanding of how to specially treat the condition. Once that is obtained the therapist will explain what they will treat accordingly.

The lymph nodes with be ‘cleared’ to allow for fluid to be directed to these viable lymph nodes. Slow and gentle strokes will be applied to direct the fluid (Typically no oil or cream is used).

The nodes will be ‘cleared’ at the end of the session as well. Exercises and general information will be given after the treatment.
